Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer appeared before the Chambers Executive Board last week to update its members on his initiatives to build or renovate public facilities in the city. The Mayor reiterated the commitment made during his 2003 mayoral campaign to have a world class downtown. He strongly encouraged the Chamber to support his efforts along with those of Orange County Mayor Rich Crotty by continuing to be totally engaged in the public facilities discussion which he stated was not an Orlando issue but a regional one.

In Dyers remarks to the Executive Board, he lamented that Orlando, although having a recognized world-class convention center and airport, has fallen well behind other communities in Florida and the Southeastern region in possessing a

state of the art performing arts center and sports facilities. In order to accomplish this, Mayor Dyer has tasked 25 staff members with creating a Downtown Stadium District.

With the recent letter

promising crucial financial support in hand from

Mayor Crotty, the Orlando Mayor indicated he sensed a softening of the opposition and appeared optimistic about overcoming any remaining opposition to the plan for new or renovated public facilities. Dyer predicted a late spring vote by city and county officials to clear the way for work on public facilities to begin.
